The 36th annual Hawaii International Film Festival stared on November 3rd and ended on the 13th. I was able to watch three of their films. The first film that I watched was on Tuesday, November 9th and I watched “Poisoning Paradise”. That same day I was able to watch “Island Earth” right after. Both these films took place in Kauai, Hawaii and really informed us on the harmful pesticides that are being used on their fields near neighborhoods and schools. The next day November 10th I watched “A Piece of the Cake”. This was definitely my favorite film of them all. It was more of a movie form other then a documentary. It took place in Vanuatu and showed us how corrupt some places really are.
I was able to see all these films at the Regal Dole Cannery. This was surprisingly my first time at this theater before these films I had always thought that the Regal Dole Cannery was in North Shore. But needless to say I was very impressed how big of an event this was and also how great it was put together. This was my first year attending a HIFF but I definitely plan to the next following years. The films that were shown were so well put together. I was so impressed by the quality and some of the interviews that were shown. I would definitely want to see “A Piece of the Cake” again some day. I had received my press pass in class and brought it to the theaters. That was literally your ticket everywhere it was so great and easy. There was a desk right when you would get to the theater where you can grab your tickets. The process was smooth then you would go inside and see a whole bunch of tables set up all for HIFF. Some of the tables had shirts for sale and others had more information about the event. Everyone was super helpful and friendly. I noticed that they had a bunch of volunteers tearing your ticket before you would enter the movie, I will definitely be volunteering for this event next year and look forward to it. If you ask me what is my favorite thing to do? I would tell you swimming with the dolphins. But of course a lot of my friends would be like I thought you were scared of the water and would never go out that far. This is true; I have the biggest fear of sharks and coral touching my feet. But this experience was just so different, beautiful, and amazing I wish I could do it everyday. This experience has helps me overcome my fear of the deep water.
I was fortunate enough to have friends who have swum with the dolphins before. They asked me if I was interested and of course it sounds cool but I was always thinking where there are dolphins there might be sharks. Not the case dolphins are actually known to scare away sharks in order to protect humans. Knowing that it brought my confidence up a bit but also swimming with a group of 10 is a sigh of relief. In order to catch the dolphins we had to be out on the west side by 7 am. They are moving from the west side to the north shore. So that means they are constantly on the move we had to keep our eyes out and follow them with our car until we reached a close enough beach where they were at. We then swam what felt like a mile but it was probably a quarter but the reward at the end was so worth it. I would recommend everyone to do this, it’s a beautiful peaceful experience that everyone should have. This is the HPU Women’s golf team. We consist of 5 girls and an amazing coach. This is my fourth and last year on the team. This year we finally got a new coach after many problems with our old one. Coach Logan is from Tracy, California he is actually coaching both our men’s and women’s teams. He has done an awesome job so far.
This is my team. As you tell we have a lot of different personalities but we all get a lot so great and have so much fun together. From left to right we have Kaia Takaki, Mika Walker, Rachael Peterson, me, Mint Chims, and of course Coach Logan. We have a very young team this year with one freshman, three sophomores, and I’m the only senior. Rachael our freshman is from Guam, and Mint one of our sophomores is from Thailand. The other two sophomores are from Hawaii and I’m from California. Having such a little team it’s nice that we come from different places and can share our culture. So far we have had 3 tournaments in our fall season. Two of the tournaments took place in Washington and the other on the Big Island of Hawaii. We didn’t do too badly but definitely looking forward to a packed spring season. We will be traveling to Las Vegas, California a couple times, and this year our Pac West tournament will be here in Hawaii. We are very excited for the season to come and be our best season yet! I had the opportunity to sit down with Skylynn (Sky) Nanoo for an interview. We got to sit and talk a little about her life and her future plans after college.
